“ChE Kokom”: An Epitome of Community Service from Itenas Chemical Engineering Major
In order to actualize an active role and positive contribution to the community, on December 22, 2023, the academic community of the Chemical Engineering Program at Institut Teknologi Nasional Bandung (Itenas) conducted a community service activity in RW 01, Taman Sari, Bandung Wetan District. On this occasion, lecturers and students from Itenas’ Chemical Engineering program provided training on compost production using a composter named ChE Kokom or Chemical Engineering Compost Column. ChE Kokom is a modification of the Kang Empos program, which is well-known to the public as one of the waste management programs of the Bandung City local government.
This activity was initiated by Mrs. Ir. The objective of this activity is to educate the local community about the benefits of compost and its production process. Lecturers provided knowledge about the role of compost in reducing organic waste and mitigating the negative impacts of waste on the environment. This understanding is expected to encourage the community to actively participate in utilizing organic waste at home. In addition to the information sessions, the activity also included training on compost production. Lecturers and students participating in this activity directly taught the local community how to use a composter and process organic waste into compost. To assist the community in managing organic waste, the Chemical Engineering Program at Itenas provided 30 sets of ChE Kokom composters to the residents of RW 01 in Taman Sari, Bandung Wetan District.
The composting activity with ChE Kokom is not only a form of social responsibility but also a tangible effort to improve the welfare and quality of life of the surrounding community, as well as a concrete step in creating an environmentally conscious society.
